HUD Announces FY 2021 Eviction Protection Grant Program

HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) announced $20 million in available grant funds for non-profit or governmental entities to provide free legal assistance to low-income residents at risk of or subject to eviction. HUD expects to make 20 awards, grant amounts ranging from $1 million to $3 million per project, to experienced legal service provider through The Eviction Protection Grant Program in areas with high rates of evictions or prospective evictions, including rural areas.

Eligible uses of Eviction Protection grant funds include assistance related to: 

  • Pretrial activities
  • Trial activities
  • Post-trial activities
  • Dispute resolution

Grant funds may not be used to pay rent or other costs a tenant owes a landlord. Additional details on allowable funding uses, administrative costs and non-allowable expense will be provided in the HUD grant agreement.

HUD expect that awarded projects will begin October 15, 2021 and conclude after 24 months (about 2 years).

Eligible applicants include (public housing agencies that meet the criteria below may also apply): 

  • State governments
  • County governments
  • Public and State controlled institutions of higher education
  • Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
  • Nonprofits without 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
  • Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized
  • City or township governments
